One of the first things you want to do when working on an estate plan is decide who will get your cars and trucks. If you live in Texas, you can name them in your will but the easiest way to pass them on is to use the Texas DMV Beneficiary Designation for a Motor Vehicle (Form VTR-121).
This allows an immediate transfer of ownership so the vehicle doesn’t get stuck in probate court for months. Insurance is cancelled when the owner passes, and you can’t buy insurance if you don’t own the vehicle, so you have to park it until the title is transferred.
There is a filing fee, but it will save your family a lot of trouble.
